Admission Requirements

Loyola's School of Social Work offers a premier clinical social work program with a comprehensive focus on families, children, and mental health. Established in 1914, the School of Social Work prepares students to practice in a variety of settings where knowledge and skill in providing direct service to individuals, families, and small groups are essential. Loyola's mission is to educate students to understand the diversity of the community and to respond to human needs within that context.

Admission Philosophy

Requirements for Admission

The admissions requirements for Loyola's Master of Social Work at Carthage are:

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
  2. A well-rounded undergraduate preparation, preferably in the liberal arts.
  3. Either a course in statistics within the past four years with a grade of C or better or a Loyola statistics refresher course within the first year of the MSW program. (A four-week refresher course will be offered at Carthage for admitted MSW students every February/March on Saturday mornings.)
  4. An academic record that shows the ability to do graduate work, usually evidenced by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. (In cases where there is a question about the applicant's ability to do graduate work, an official score report on the GRE or MAT may be requested.)
  5. Volunteer or work experience in human services, supported by at least one reference letter which addresses the qualities of genuine concern for people, readiness to be of service to others, and potential for direct service skills.
  6. Personal characteristics that point to the capacity for professional practice as evidenced by:
    1. an appreciation of complexity in human affairs; recognition of the possibilities of connection between self and other in a world of diversity; interest in the interconnections between individual needs and social problems; interest in the application of scientific knowledge to alleviate these problems;
    2. personal maturity;
    3. a high level of personal integrity, readiness to identify with the values and ethical principles of the social work profession;
    4. commitment to social and economic justice and to improvement of the condition of oppressed and underserved groups.

Procedure for Admission to the Loyola MSW at Carthage

Applicants for admission to the MSW program must collect all of the following and send them in one packet to:

  1. A completed application form. The application can be found in the catalog.
  2. An application fee of $40.00 (non-refundable), required of prospective students who have not been previously registered at Loyola University Chicago.
  3. A completed personal statement, the guidelines for which are on the application form in the catalog.
  4. Statement on human biology (see #12 on application form).
  5. Official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work in a sealed envelope as issued by the institution(s).
  6. Three written references in envelopes sealed by the writer and signed across the back. At least one of these should be from the setting where the applicant has work or volunteer experience. For each reference, attach the "reference request letter" (or a photocopy) located in the back of the catalog.

Applicants also have the option of applying online or downloading application forms.

After the completed application materials have been received, the application is reviewed by the admissions committee.

For the Loyola Master of Social Work at Carthage, deadline for preferred consideration is February. After that date, applications will be taken on a space available basis.
